Setting up Multiple Internet Connection Accounts in Windows XP

Windows XP also uses a wizard to set up multiple Internet accounts. The wizard
walks you through setting up new accounts. You access this wizard through the
Control Panel on the Start menu, and then you follow the instructions on each
screen. To create a new account, you would follow these steps:
1. Click Start | All Programs | Accessories | Communications. In
Communications, double-click the icon labeled New Connection
Wizard.

2. Click Next when the first screen appears, welcoming you to the wizard.
3. Select the option labeled Connect to the Internet. Click Next.
4. When the next screen appears, you have the options of Choose from a
list of Internet service providers (ISPs), Set up my connection
manually, or Use the CD I got from my ISP. If you choose the
first option, a list of ISPs will be provided that you can select from. If
you choose the second option, you will continue answering questions
that will enable you to set up your new connection. The third option is
used if your ISP provided a CD that is used to install software and automatically
configure settings. For this section’s example, we continue with
the steps needed to set up a connection manually. Click Next.
5. The next screen provides three options that are used to configure your
account—Connect using a dial-up modem, Connect using a
broadband connection that requires a username and password,
and Connect using a broadband connection that is always on.
While these options are self-explanatory, your choice will depend on the
type of connection you’re using to get on the Internet. For the
remaining steps, we assume that you’re setting up a dial-up connection.
After making this choice, click Next.
6. Enter the name for this connection, and then click Next.
7. Enter the phone number for the ISP and then click Next.
8. When the next screen appears, you can decide who will have access to
the account. If you wanted to allow any account in Windows to use this
connection, you would select Anyone’s use. For the connection to only
be available to the account you’re currently logged in with, select the
option called My use only. Because we are setting up an account that
can only be used by you, select My use only, and then click Next.
9. In the field labeled User name, enter the username provided by your
ISP for this account. In the other two fields, enter your password. To
prevent those who shouldn’t have access to this account from using it,
deselect the checkbox labeled Use this account name and password
when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer. To
ensure this is deselected, verify that a checkmark doesn’t appear in the
checkbox. Click Next to continue.
10. Click Finish to complete the setup of your account.
